Staff Machine Learning Engineer

Responsibilities

• Set the technical direction for Payabli’s model portfolio, including existing transaction- and merchant-risk models and new payments lifecycle models.
• Establish experimentation workflows, model monitoring, drift detection, performance benchmarking, retraining, and incident-response foundations.
• Translate ambiguous payments problems into modeling opportunities and communicate model performance in terms of business impact.
• Own and prioritize the ML roadmap with product, engineering, and risk operations.
• Mentor ML engineers and raise technical standards through influence, example, and durable engineering practices.

Requirements

• Require 8+ years of ML engineering experience, including 4+ years building and shipping production models that drive business decisions.
• Demonstrated ownership of modeling architecture and significant technical decisions through production.
• Breadth across model types and problem framing, with the ability to build models in unfamiliar domains.
• Experience taking models from prototype to production and owning monitoring, retraining, and incident response after launch.
• Deep understanding of precision/recall, operational cost, explainability, latency, and regulatory or compliance tradeoffs.
• Experience establishing ML processes and infrastructure for a growing team.
• Strong technical leadership, coding, design-review, communication, and stakeholder collaboration abilities.
• Comfort working in a fast-moving startup environment with a bias toward shipping.
• Payments, fintech, lending, risk, underwriting, fraud, credit modeling, chargebacks, merchant risk, KYC/KYB, or authorization/routing experience is preferred.
• Familiarity with AWS ML tools such as SageMaker, feature stores, training and inference pipelines, and MLOps tooling is preferred.
• Interest in potentially developing into people leadership is preferred but not required.
