Associate Director Digital, Data & AI Legal (m/f/d)

Merck seeks an Associate Director of Digital, Data & AI Legal to provide strategic legal and compliance counsel for ex-US digital health, AI, and data initiatives. The role involves embedded partnership with business and technology teams across international markets, managing risks related to AI, data protection, privacy, and regulatory compliance while enabling responsible innovation.
Responsibilities
- Provide embedded legal and compliance counsel to business and technology stakeholders on ex-US digital health, AI, and data initiatives across full solution lifecycle
- Assess, document, and monitor legal and compliance risks related to AI and data use, including privacy, IP, bias, and third-party risk
- Review, negotiate, and manage technology, AI, data, cloud, and digital partnership agreements across multiple international markets
- Design and deliver compliance training programmes on digital, data, and AI topics for business stakeholders across international markets
- Collaborate with regional legal teams, Global Privacy Office, IT/digital functions, and external partners to ensure global alignment and consistency
Requirements
- Law degree (common law or civil law) with current license to practise or equivalent professional certification
- Minimum 5 years post-qualification legal experience in legal department or law firm
- Working knowledge of AI, data protection, privacy, cybersecurity, and digital regulatory frameworks including EU AI Act and GDPR
- Fluent in English; proficiency in German, French, Spanish, Mandarin, or Japanese preferred
- Experience in pharmaceutical, life sciences, healthcare, or regulated industry
- Advanced degree (LL.M.) in technology law, data protection, or health law preferred
