Job Description

Join the Storage and Data Management Group in CERN’s IT Department as a Distributed Storage Engineer for a unique challenge as the next step in your career. CERN, take part! The CERN IT Storage and Data Management group operates the core services used by both LHC and non-LHC experiments for data collection, archival, reconstruction, analysis, and global distribution via the Worldwide LHC Computing Grid. As a Distributed Storage Engineer, you will contribute to the design, evolution, and operation of large-scale, distributed critical storage services for the CERN cloud and computing infrastructures. You will join a team to work with open-source Ceph-based block, object, and filesystem solutions (including CephFS and NFS integrations), ensuring high availability, performance, and resilience across multi-datacenter environments.

Your role will involve system-wide troubleshooting in a distributed Linux-based environment and optimising storage architectures for demanding workloads. You will use your C++ software development skills to help identify and troubleshoot issues with the Ceph code base and to contribute code improvements to the upstream open-source Ceph project when necessary.

You will have opportunities to learn and contribute to improving automation, deployment, and observability, aligned with modern DevOps practices, to participate in inspiring projects and new technologies such as storage for HPC and AI/ML and to engage with our international partners, participating to conferences and workshops.

Functions

Management and operations of distributed disk storage, block, object and filesystem services based on mainstream open-source technologies (Ceph)

Participate in the evolution of architecture and design of storage services for CERN and software-defined storage technology with Open Source

Integrate, troubleshoot and maintain distributed disk storage systems at scale, across multiple availability zones and data centres.

Contribute to documentation, development, optimisation and further automation of storage services.

Contribute to change management, incident response, and user support.

Liaise with key stakeholders inside and outside of the IT department.

Qualifications

Master's degree or equivalent relevant experience in the field of Computer Science or a related field.

Experience:

Strong interest in service management, including operations, troubleshooting, user support, configuration and automation

Deep understanding of Linux operating system performance, tuning and administration

Deep understanding of architecture of distributed storage and filesystems (e.g. NFS, CephFS)

Debugging and diagnosing issues in complex distributed environments, spanning hardware, network, and software layers

Demonstrated experience in C++ software development of distributed storage systems (preferably, but not necessarily, with Ceph source code)

Strong collaboration and communication skills to work effectively with multiple cross-functional teams, users and partners.

Nice-to-have Skills

Good knowledge of scripting languages (python, shell)
